Virtualisation
Thursday, March 13, 2008
Virtualisation was recently listed among the top 10 strategic technologies for 2008 by Gartner. But how can it benefit your business?
Virtualisation is the ability to run multiple virtual servers using one or more physical servers. Instead the traditional method of a single server installed per machine, multiple “virtual servers” can be run on single server. This helps maximise the use of your hardware, ensuring none of your resources go to waste. Virtualisation can also be used to provide redundancy to your environment. If one physical machine fails another can take its place and continue to run virtual servers.
The Cavalry understands the benefits virtualisation to your organisation. CRN reports that ‘virtualisation of resources such as servers, CPUs, storage, switching and appliances can provide significant cost savings as well as support new services and diverse forms of access'.
And in a time where we all must be aware of our environmental impact, the virtualisation of networks means the consolidation of resources reduces power usage and heat dispersion.
Find out how the Cavalry can implement virtualisation for your business.

Go Green
Tuesday, April 15, 2008
Green IT was recently reported as the number one priority for organisations worldwide by industry research firm Gartner.
So how can an organisation ‘Go Green’?
There are several ways to minimise your computer systems environmental impact including:
Power Generation – Using alternative electricity sources or reducing the consumption level of your existing power source. Benefits of reducing power include reducing electricity costs and lowering power consumption which reduces heat therefore extending the lifetime of computer equipment.
New Hardware – The world’s largest IT companies including IBM and Lenovo are building hardware that use less power then previous models, giving customers greener computing options.
Server Virtualisation – as reported in the March Newsletter, is the process of running two or more ‘servers’ on one physical server. This process allows for a reduction in power consumption as few physical servers are operating.
Power Management - Advanced Configuration and Power Interface is an open industry standard allowing users to control the power management of computer hardware meaning monitors and hard drives can be programmed to turn off after a certain time of inactivity.
Recycling – Old computers can either be taken to recycling centres or donated to charity organisations that use simple system requirements.

Manage Your IT Today!
Wednesday, May 14, 2008
IT industry analyst Gartner recently reported on the increase in organisations’ outsourcing in 2008. For organisation with less then 200 employees it is not a cost effective option. However, Gartner found that organisations have changed their focus and were no longer purely concentrating on ‘saving money’ when considering outsourcing. But why outsource?
The many benefits of outsourcing include; leaving the outsource company to manage and maintain their IT systems meaning organisations can focus on their core business; allows access to a broad range and depth of skilled IT engineers that would otherwise not be available via a single IT employee; access to the latest technology and process through the outsourced company’s wider net of resources and the use of the outsourced company as a strategic advisor for the future development of an organisation’s IT systems.
So to take charge of your IT systems today and contact The Cavalry!

Video Conferencing
Wednesday, June 11, 2008
We’re almost half way through the year and hasn’t it gone quickly. This month we have some exciting news to share about improving your operational efficiency through video conferencing, new client stories and our latest community partnership.
Video conferencing is something that we’ve implemented in our business and the operational efficiency impact has been overwhelming. Being an IT services company our staff are in disparate locations at all times of the day. In the past, it meant team meetings were less effective or in some cases postponed until a face to face meeting could be setup. Video conferencing has improved our productivity and the effectiveness of remote meetings.
Industries including banking, insurance, education, healthcare and government are set to take up this technology in large numbers according to Polycom. And the reason….. it saves you time and money! Netscout recently reported that a study of the use of VC found the reduction in travel costs as the main reason for using the technology. The use of video conferencing puts an end to employees going to and from meetings whether it is across the city, across the country or across the world. The result is an increase in productivity in the elimination of ‘travel time’ and a reduction of travel and loss of productivity costs.
Other reasons for the increase in take up include the implementation of fibre optic cabling, the decreasing cost of broadband, improvements in video conferencing technologies including cheaper hardware, has also made the technology cheaper and more accessible to the wider population.
VC also allows employees to live where they work.
We’re also excited to share that The Cavalry has partnered with Opportunity International (OI) to help make a difference to the growing problem of world poverty. Our team will be involved in community activities that will help OI continue to help people make their way out of poverty permanently.
